Steel shot is a metallic pellet made of iron and carbon, which is used in ballistic processes, such
as abrasive blast cleaning, pellet gun manufacturing, and shot peening. Steel shot is classified
according to its overall quality, softness, and shape consistency. It is often referred to as steel
grit. It is manufactured through a process called cold heading, which results in a ring of metal
surrounding the shot.
Carbon is naturally present in the earth and is found as graphite, diamond, and other
compounds. It is also obtained artificially in the form of bone black and lampblack. Carbon is a
nonmetallic element, but it can significantly change the properties of iron. Carbon-containing
materials are categorized as nonmetallic, but combined carbon is treated as a metal. In the case
of steel, this carbon is a compound of carbon and iron.
